Container liners

The picture within the liner segment remains negative despite strong earnings results in recent quarters. Geopolitical uncertainty has created a buffer underneath the market, but market participants and equity prices are increasingly recognising the significant supply-side overhang that is forming. Demand has grown at a steady rate and economic growth has shown surprising resilience throughout the year, yet rates are still falling — which lends credence to the idea of a supply-driven market.

The balance is skewed to the downside for the year ahead and is expected to continuously pressure prices. Opportunities may arise, but they will primarily be headline-driven, as the underlying balance continues to deteriorate.

Container feeders

Feeder operators have been more insulated from volatility than liners. Charter markets for smaller ships have remained firm for longer, helped by continued network complexity, service reshuffling, and carriers' desire to secure flexible capacity. That has reduced direct exposure to the sharp swings in spot box rates and allowed some feeder-focused players to lock in longer-term employment on attractive terms.

Ordering has been low in the smaller feeder sizes for a number of years. Despite a pickup in contracting in recent quarters, supply remains relatively tight for the foreseeable future, providing a counterweight to the deteriorating demand picture. Risks remain from the cascading of larger tonnage onto smaller trades and a broader normalisation in the container market, which could ultimately spill over into regional rates.

Feeders should continue to hold up better than liners in the near term, but they are not immune if the broader system shifts into persistent overcapacity and charter renewal rates eventually reset lower. Despite equities already pricing in the segment's relative resilience, good yield opportunities remain — the primary risk being the roll-over of long-term contracts.
